Evil and its Consequences
પાપવગ્ગો સમજાવે છે કે સારા કે ખરાબ કાર્યો અચાનક મોટું પરિણામ નથી આપતા, પરંતુ પાણીના એક-એક ટીપાથી ઘડો ભરાય છે તેમ ધીમે ધીમે એકઠા થાય છે.
अभित्थरेथ कल्याणे, पापा चित्तं निवारये।
दन्धञ्हि करोतो पुञ्ञं, पापस्मिं रमती मनो॥
પુણ્ય (સારા, ફાયદાકારક) કાર્યો કરવામાં ઉતાવળ કરવી જોઈએ, અને મનને પાપ (હાનિકારક, દુષ્ટ) કાર્યોથી રોકવું જોઈએ; કારણ કે ધીમી ગતિએ પુણ્ય કરનારનું મન પાપમાં આનંદ લેવા લાગે છે.
One should hasten to do good [what is beneficial, wholesome, skillful, meritorious], and restrain the mind from harm [evil, wrong, worthless, bad]; For when one is slow in doing good, the mind takes delight in harm.
पापञ्चे पुरिसो कयिरा, न नं कयिरा पुनप्पुनं।
न तम्हि छन्दं कयिराथ, दुक्खो पापस्स उच्चयो॥
જો કોઈ વ્યક્તિ પાપ (હાનિકારક કાર્ય) કરે, તો તેણે તે વારંવાર ન કરવું જોઈએ; તેણે તેમાં આનંદ ન લેવો જોઈએ, કારણ કે પાપ (હાનિ) નો સંચય દુઃખ (પીડા, અસંતોષ) લાવે છે.
If a person commits harm [produces harm to oneself, harm to others, or harm to both], they should not do it again and again; One should not take delight in it, for the accumulation of harm brings suffering [discomfort, unpleasantness, discontentment, dissatisfaction, stress, pain, disease].
पुञ्ञञ्चे पुरिसो कयिरा, कयिरा नं पुनप्पुनं।
तम्हि छन्दं कयिराथ, सुखो पुञ्ञस्स उच्चयो॥
જો કોઈ વ્યક્તિ પુણ્ય (સારું કાર્ય) કરે, તો તેણે તે વારંવાર કરવું જોઈએ; તેણે તેમાં આનંદ લેવો જોઈએ, કારણ કે પુણ્ય (સારા કાર્યો) નો સંચય સુખ (સંતોષ, આરામ) લાવે છે.
If a person does good [produces good for oneself, good for others, or good for both], they should do it again and again; One should take delight in it, for the accumulation of good brings contentment [ease, comfort, happiness, pleasure].
पापोपि पस्सति भद्रं, याव पापं न पच्चति।
यदा च पच्चति पापं, अथ पापो पापानि पस्सति॥
પાપી (હાનિ પહોંચાડનાર) વ્યક્તિ પણ ત્યાં સુધી સારું નસીબ જોઈ શકે છે, જ્યાં સુધી પાપ (હાનિકારક કાર્ય) પાકતું નથી; પરંતુ જ્યારે પાપ પાકે છે, ત્યારે પાપી પાપના પરિણામો ભોગવે છે.
Even a person who causes harm may see good fortune, as long as the harm has not ripened; But when the harm ripens, then the harm-doer experiences the consequences of harm.
भद्रोपि पस्सति पापं, याव भद्रं न पच्चति।
यदा च पच्चति भद्रं, अथ भद्रो भद्रानि पस्सति॥
પુણ્યાત્મા (સારું કરનાર) પણ ત્યાં સુધી હાનિ અનુભવી શકે છે, જ્યાં સુધી પુણ્ય (સારું કાર્ય) પાકતું નથી; પરંતુ જ્યારે પુણ્ય પાકે છે, ત્યારે સારું કરનાર સારા પરિણામો ભોગવે છે.
Even a doer of good may experience harm, as long as the good has not ripened; But when the good ripens, then the doer of good experiences good results.
मावमञ्ञेथ पापस्स, न मन्तं आगमिस्सति।
उदबिन्दुनिपातेन, उदकुम्भोपि पूरति।
बालो पूरति पापस्स, थोकं थोकम्पि आचिनं॥
'તે મારી પાસે પાછું નહીં આવે' એવું વિચારીને પાપને (હાનિને) ઓછું ન આંકો; જેમ પાણીનાં પડતાં ટીપાંઓથી ઘડો ભરાઈ જાય છે; તેવી જ રીતે, થોડું-થોડું એકઠું કરીને મૂર્ખ (અવિવેકી, બાળસમાન) વ્યક્તિ પાપથી ભરાઈ જાય છે.
Do not underestimate harm, thinking, ‘It will not come back to me’; Just as falling drops of water, fill up a bucket; So too, the undiscerning one [childish person, immature person] is filled with evil, accumulating it little by little.
मावमञ्ञेथ पुञ्ञस्स, न मन्दं आगमिस्सति।
उदबिन्दुनिपातेन, उदकुम्भोपि पूरति।
धीरो पूरति पुञ्ञस्स, थोकं थोकम्पि आचिनं॥
'તે મારી પાસે નહીં આવે' એવું વિચારીને પુણ્યને (સારા કાર્યોને) ઓછું ન આંકો; જેમ પાણીનાં પડતાં ટીપાંઓથી ઘડો ભરાઈ જાય છે; તેવી જ રીતે, થોડું-થોડું એકઠું કરીને ધીર (સમજદાર, સ્થિર) વ્યક્તિ પુણ્યથી ભરાઈ જાય છે.
Do not underestimate good, thinking, ‘It will not come to me’; Just as falling drops of water, fill up a bucket; So too, the steadfast one [intelligent one, stable, wise] is filled with good, accumulating it little by little.
वाणिजोव भयं मग्गं, अप्पसत्थो महद्धनो।
विसं जीवितुकामोव, पापानि परिवज्जये॥
જેમ ઓછા સાથીઓ અને વધુ સંપત્તિ ધરાવતો વેપારી ભયજનક રસ્તો ટાળે છે; તેવી જ રીતે, જીવવાની ઈચ્છા રાખનાર વ્યક્તિએ પાપ (હાનિકારક કાર્યો) ટાળવા જોઈએ, જેમ તે ઝેર ટાળે છે.
Just as a merchant with few companions and great wealth, avoids a dangerous road; So too, should one wishing to live, avoid harmful actions like avoiding poison.
पाणिम्हि चे वणो नस्स, हरेय्य पाणिना विसं।
नाब्बणं विसमन्वेति, नत्थि पापं अकुब्बतो॥
જો હાથ પર કોઈ ઘા ન હોય, તો વ્યક્તિ હાથથી ઝેર પકડી શકે છે; ઝેર ઘા વિનાના વ્યક્તિને અસર કરતું નથી, અને જે પાપ (હાનિ) કરતો નથી તેના માટે કોઈ ખરાબ પરિણામ હોતું નથી.
If there is no wound on the hand, one may carry poison with the hand; Poison does not affect one without a wound, and there is no consequence for one who does not do harm.
यो अप्पदुट्ठस्स नरस्स दुस्सति,
सुद्धस्स पोसस्स अनङ्गणस्स।
तमेव बालं पच्चेति पापं,
सुखुमो रजो पटिवातंव खित्तो॥
જે કોઈ નિર્દોષ (દોષરહિત), શુદ્ધ અને નિષ્કલંક વ્યક્તિને નુકસાન પહોંચાડે છે (અથવા દ્વેષ કરે છે); તે નુકસાન તે મૂર્ખ (અવિવેકી) વ્યક્તિ પાસે જ પાછું આવે છે, જેમ પવનની વિરુદ્ધ ફેંકવામાં આવેલી ઝીણી ધૂળ પાછી આવે છે.
Whoever harms [injures, opposes, hates, detests] a blameless [without fault, who is not angry, not upset] person, a pure person without blemish; the harm comes back to that undiscerning one, like fine dust that is thrown against the wind.
गब्भमेके उप्पज्जन्ति, निरयं पापकम्मिनो।
सग्गं सुगतिनो यन्ति, परिनिब्बन्ति अनासवा॥
કેટલાક (મનુષ્ય લોકમાં) ગર્ભમાં જન્મે છે, પાપીઓ નરકમાં જાય છે; સદાચારીઓ (સારા વર્તનવાળા) સ્વર્ગમાં જાય છે, અને જેઓ આશ્રવરહિત (ચિત્તના મળોથી મુક્ત) છે તેઓ પરમ મુક્તિ (નિર્વાણ) પ્રાપ્ત કરે છે.
Some are born in a womb, evil-doers arise in hell; The well-conducted [virtuous] go to heaven, and those free from defilements [without mental effluents, taintless] attain final liberation.
न अन्तलिक्खे न समुद्दमज्झे,
न पब्बतांनं विवरं पविस्स।
न विज्जती सो जगतिप्पदेसो,
यत्थट्ठितो मुच्चेय्य पापकम्मा॥
ન તો આકાશમાં, ન સમુદ્રની મધ્યમાં, ન તો પર્વતની ગુફામાં પ્રવેશીને; વિશ્વમાં એવી કોઈ જગ્યા નથી, જ્યાં રહીને વ્યક્તિ પોતાના પાપકર્મોના (અકુશળ કાર્યોના) પરિણામથી બચી શકે છે.
Neither in the sky, nor in the middle of the sea, nor by entering a mountain cave; No place exists in the world, where staying, one might escape from the result of their evil deeds [unwholesome actions, harmful actions, misconduct].
न अन्तलिक्खे न समुद्दमज्झे,
न पब्बतांनं विवरं पविस्स।
न विज्जती सो जगतिप्पदेसो,
यत्थट्ठितं नप्पसहेय्य मच्चु॥
ન તો આકાશમાં, ન સમુદ્રની મધ્યમાં, ન તો પર્વતની ગુફામાં પ્રવેશીને; વિશ્વમાં એવી કોઈ જગ્યા નથી, જ્યાં રહીને વ્યક્તિ મૃત્યુથી બચી શકે છે.
Neither in the sky, nor in the middle of the sea, nor by entering a mountain cave; No place exists in the world, where staying, one might escape from death.
